Traditional Chinese kites made by master
kitemaker Mr. Jiehua Sun receive wide-ranged recognition.
In March 2008, Mr. Jiehua Sun was invited by the Smithsonian Associates to the 42nd Annual Smithsonian Kite Festival to demonstrate the art of making traditional Chinese kites. On Mar. 15, Mr. Sun demonstrated the making of a dragon kite during the Family Day at the National Air and Space Museum.
On March 29, Mr. Sun's dragon kite received
much cheer during flight demonstration. He had to launch several time due to
crowd request. In the end, the kite won three
major awards in the handmade kite competition.
In 2001, Mr. Sun presented his kites in the
35th Annual Smithsonian Kite Festival held on March 24, 2001 in Washington, DC
and the 6th Annual Maryland
International Kite Exposition in Ocean City, MD. In 2002, he participated
the 36th Annual Smithsonian Kite Festival. His kites received
much cheer and attention at all these events, as well as many awards.
After the Smithsonian Kite Festival, Mr.
Sun plans to participate in a couple of other kite events to show his work as
well as to design and construct new kites of traditional Chinese style.
Mr. Sun would like to learn the technique
of 3-dimensional kitemaking.
